Cecil Bellrose Manor Opens in Griesbach

Celebrating a New Chapter: Cecil Bellrose Manor Opens in Griesbach

On February 3rd, 2025, the unveiling of Cecil Bellrose Manor, a brand-new affordable housing development, was proudly celebrated in the Village at Griesbach with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Led by the Otipemisiwak Métis Government: The Government of the Métis Nation Within Alberta, this exciting new community development marks a major milestone in Edmonton’s efforts to provide more accessible housing for families and individuals in need. With 127 units offered at 79% of the Maximum Allowable Rental Rates (MARR), Cecil Bellrose Manor offers an affordable and high-quality option for those who need it most.

Accessibility and Innovation: A Home for Everyone

Cecil Bellrose Manor stands out not only for its affordability but also for its commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. Of the 127 units, 42 are designed to be accessible, providing a barrier-free housing option. Additionally, 10 fully automated suites are specifically designed to meet the needs of families with physical limitations, ensuring a greater level of independence and convenience for all residents.

Adding to the community-focused design, the development includes an on-site early learning and childcare centre, operated by the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. The childcare centre will offer a culturally safe environment for young children, with an emphasis on traditional learning practices, including outdoor space for land-based education and traditional food. This is a significant resource for families with young children, ensuring that the needs of working parents and children are met within the same supportive environment.

Honouring Cecil Bellrose’s Legacy and Empowering Indigenous Families

The manor is named after Cecil Bellrose, a respected Métis leader and former leader of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, known for his advocacy of Indigenous rights and his work toward community empowerment. His legacy is honoured in this development, which is designed specifically with Indigenous families in mind—especially women with children. To ensure that the project benefits the communities it was designed for, applicants must provide proof of Indigenous ancestry and meet Alberta Government income thresholds to qualify for housing.

A Collaborative Effort to Bring More Affordable Housing Options to Edmonton

The launch of Cecil Bellrose Manor represents a collaborative effort among several key organizations and institutions. This project was brought to life through a partnership between Métis Housing AB, Metis Nation of Alberta, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the City of Edmonton, and Canada Lands Company (CLC Limited). This joint effort reflects a shared commitment to meeting the growing demand for affordable housing solutions and responding to the needs of Indigenous communities in Edmonton and beyond.

We are particularly excited that this project is a CMHC Federal Lands Initiative, which highlights the company’s strategic focus on social impact and community empowerment. As the developer of Village of Griesbach, Canada Lands Company recognizes that the availability of affordable housing has been, and remains, an important issue for many Canadians. Providing affordable housing is a core part of their commitment to creating inclusive, vibrant, and complete communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
